Watch any martial arts movie and you will see an impressive display of kicking prowess - flowery, spectacular and acrobatic. Watch an MMA fight and you will typically see only a few piss poor attempts to land a simple push or round kick. Look at the entire landscape of martial arts and you will see that kicking makes up a pretty decent percentage of techniques. So, what gives? Does kicking work? Is it effective? And, if so, why do we not see more of it in the cage/ring?Technorati Profile

Older grapplers are generally treated in many different ways. Some are treated like glass by some instructors. Some are given social promotions and then they need to be protected by the instructors from other grapplers. Some are not taken as serious students because of their age or because they are not out there competing. Lots of OGs are viewed as income just to keep the school running or to replace equipment and things like that. Some younger students, the young punks, view them as grappling dummies and they are just there to be used, abused and beaten up on at will whenever they feel like doing it. |

For centuries “iron body” training was participated in my many martial artists. Cast aside as anachronistic or overly traditional practice, this type o training is still very important to the combat athlete. Most of us get a decent amount through the high end, contact heavy methods of modern grappling and sparring training. However, one can do a bit more. And one should. Now I am not telling you that you should punch brick walls or walk on nails, but one should analyze the more healthy aspects of hard body training. |

It always amazes me when people are shocked when the latest superstar athletes are accused of using performance-enhancing drugs. Baseball, even golf, has come under increased scrutiny and pressure over the subject. As a trainer of professional athletes and a former semi-professional myself, I would be more shocked of the multitude of athletic commissions found athletes who did not use something, anything, of a chemical nature in their pursuit of excellence in their given sport.

The other day, I was thinking back to when I was in college. Like
most people, I have good and bad memories from those days. But the
one thing that always sticks out in my mind after all these years
was a statement that was made during freshman orientation:
"Look to right and to the left of you. In four years, one of you
won't be here."
